Here’s a fun July 4th dessert that kids can help make!

These patriotic flag cupcakes will look awesome at your family’s fourth of July cookout, and they taste delicious too. They’re also perfect for Memorial Day or Flag Day as well.

I love keeping July 4th simple! It should be about easy food, spending time with family, and appreciating the amazing country we have.

Ingredients Needed for Flag Cupcakes:

  • A white cake mix – plus oil, egg, as specified on the box
  • Tub of white icing
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries

We had a large package of blueberries to use up, and I decided to use this adorable July 4th snack idea from The Educator’s Spin On It and make cupcakes instead.

I used a box cake mix (white) and white icing out of a tub.  Can’t get much simpler than that!  Whenever I use icing out of a tub, I always hear Marie Barone saying something patronizing over my shoulder… “Oh, cookie dough from a log!  Well, it’s almost like baking!” (from Everybody Loves Raymond).

Tips for making delicious cupcakes:

Pat the berries dry with a paper towel before putting them on the cupcakes.  Wet blueberries will slide off the icing!

Also, I would recommend waiting to put on the fruit until just before serving.  The strawberries will create juice that will run down the icing!

Gresham helped me make these.  He always enjoys doing special things for holidays!  And then the boys and Janie and the neighbor kids promptly ate 10 of them.

Happy Fourth of July! Need more activity ideas? We’ve got some fun ones!

Kids will love the art process involved in these Salt and Glue Fireworks! So cool.

Grab some popsicle sticks and make some Popsicle Stick Flags! Add ribbon for hanging, or make several and create a bunting.
