These pipe cleaner beaded hearts are a fabulous Valentine’s Day craft for kids of all ages!

Tweens and teens will love this craft, but even preschoolers can make these pipe cleaner hearts. Threading the beads onto the pipe cleaners is great fine motor practice for kids ages 4+, although younger kids will need a bit of help assembling the heart.

We’re using our pipe cleaner hearts as doorknob hangers! Janie loves making special door decorations for each holiday.

They would also make fantastic gifts for friends, teachers, and neighbors. Or, hand them out to residents at a local nursing home!

Supplies Needed for Pipe Cleaner Beaded Hearts:

  • Pipe cleaners in white, pink, and red
  • Beads
  • Buttons
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue

You can truly use whatever beads and buttons you have on hand! I didn’t purchase a single thing for this craft – just raided the craft closet to see what we had. It’s fun to use a variety of types and colors of beads and buttons.

Janie didn’t like the buttons at all and used only pony beads on hers. I think they added a nice dimension!

Step 1: Fold a pipe cleaner in half. Then open it up a little. The folded edge will make the bottom of the heart.

Step 2: Start threading beads onto the pipe cleaner.

You can make your heart symmetrical by adding matching beads to both sides. Or, you can just add beads however you want!

Step 3: Leave about an inch of pipe cleaner free on both ends. Then bend the pipe cleaner into a heart shape. Twist the ends together to secure them.

Add a couple of beads to the twisted ends to cover them up. I just slid on two beads from the bottom and then added a dot of hot glue to hold the beads in place.

Then make more hearts! It’s fun to experiment with different patterns and colors.

We added ribbon for hanging our hearts. So cute!

Here’s a fun way to make Felt Heart Necklaces! This post also shows you how to make felt heart people with posable pipe cleaner arms and legs.
