Here’s some more crafty Christmas fun for kids! This time, we’ll show you how to make an adorable toy solider ornament out of a wooden clothespin. Get the kids together and make a whole battalion of cute soldiers to hang on the tree!

Then you’ll want to check out our cardboard reindeer ornament. So cute and so easy to make.

This toy soldier ornament design came from an ornament that I made in kindergarten, and we still have that ornament! I so clearly remember walking into my kindergarten class, and my teacher had three stations set up with different ornaments to make. Such a fun memory!

Supplies Needed:

  • Wood clothespins – this type that doesn’t open and close (Amazon affiliate link)
  • Acrylic paint – in red, blue, and yellow
  • Tiny googly eyes
  • Red pipe cleaners – 1/2 pipe cleaner per ornament
  • Black pom pom balls – one per ornament
  • String or ribbon for hanging the ornaments
  • Hot glue or Tacky Glue

How to Make the Toy Soldier Ornament

Start by drawing a pencil line to mark the division between the soldier’s jacket and pants.

Then paint the coat and pants, and let them dry.

Use some yellow paint to make cords on the soldier’s jacket. Glue on the googly eyes and the pom pom ball hat. Cut a piece of ribbon for hanging the ornament.

We thought that the arms looked best with two layers of pipe cleaner. Cut a segment of red pipe cleaner and fold the ends in toward the center as shown.

This next step is important! Glue the ribbon to the back of the toy soldier BEFORE gluing on the pipe cleaner arms. This secures the ribbon well, and also looks better than gluing it on after the arms.

Then, glue on the arms, and your ornament is complete!

So much cuteness! These are perfect for kids to make and hang on the tree, or they can give them as gifts.

Then make a beaded candy cane ornament! Who else made these as kids besides me? This is another one that I made when I was in kindergarten, and I’ve made them with each of my kids. Simply string beads onto a pipe cleaner, cut off the ends. Glue on the ends beads (on both ends) and then bend it into a candy cane shape. So simple and fun!
