Here are some fun hands-on math activities with a summer watermelon theme! Print watermelon number cards and a Roll It, Write It, Count It mat. Below, you’ll also find a recipe for some amazing watermelon scented play dough. Scroll down to the bottom of the post for the printable activities. First, I’ll tell you how to use them, and then the file is at the bottom.

We’ve been having so much fun with watermelon – we’ve done watermelon hammering and melon balling, etc. There are so many real-life activities that are great for kids!

Printable Watermelon Number Cards

Print number cards 1-20 with a fun watermelon theme. We decided to make some watermelon play dough to go with them! The play dough smells AMAZING, and we will be playing with it all summer I’m sure.

Black beans are great in place of watermelon seeds. You could use real seeds if you want, but it’s much faster to use black beans than to pick seeds out of watermelon.

Preschoolers and kindergartners will love the number cards! They can line up the cards in order, or line up all the even numbers, etc.

We used the play dough and black beans to count out the correct number of seeds.

Then it was just fun to play with the play dough and black beans! Janie and Jonathan had fun rolling it out and playing with our cookie cutters and play dough scissors.

How to Make Watermelon Play Dough

Here’s how I made the play dough:

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1 Tablespoon cream of tartar

1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

1 cup water

1 packet of Kool-Aid watermelon flavor

Stir all the dry ingredients together, including the Kool-Aid. Then add the oil and water and stir well. Pour the mixture into a non-stick skillet and heat over medium heat. I like to stir it with my rubber spatula. Stir almost continually, and it will thicken and turn into a play dough consistency. Turn the whole blob over if needed to get rid of any gooey patches, then remove it from the pan. I let mine cool on the counter and then kneaded it well.

Watermelon Roll it, Write it, Count it Mats

These number mats are simple to use, and very engaging for kids who are just learning their numbers. Roll the dice, then write the number you roll. Then count out that many watermelon seeds! If you laminate the mat or slide it into a page protector, you can use it again and again with a dry erase marker. That’s half the fun for kids! (The other half is the dice – ha!)

For the youngest kids, use one dice. Take it to the next level by using a 12-sided math dice, two regular dice, or even three dice.
