This giant bubble solution recipe is so simple, and the results are amazing!  We made some fun bubble wands with stuff from around the house.  And who says bubbles are just for toddlers?  All our kids from age 2 to age 13 (almost 13!) enjoyed this activity.

Giant Bubble Solution Recipe, and Homemade Bubble Blowers

I mixed up a bunch of bubble solution and put it in our water table, which worked great.  Easy for everyone to access, and no spilling, mostly.

To make enough bubble solution for the water table, I used:

  • 2 gallons of warm water
  • 1/2 cup dish soap (I think Dawn works the best)
  • 6 Tablespoons of glycerin

You can experiment with the amount of dish soap.  I have made this in the past with 6 cups of water (vs. 2 gallons) and 1/2 cup of dishwashing liquid, but the soap now seems much more concentrated than it was in the past.  If your bubbles aren’t bubbly enough, you can always try adding more!

The bubble solution does not need to be very deep – just deep enough to dip your bubble blowers.  You can save the solution and use it again later.  In fact, I think it works better after it has sat awhile.  The glycerin really does help to make the bubbles larger and stronger!  I ordered mine from Amazon – if you have prime, this is a much better option than driving around to different stores because it can be challenging to find.

For blowers, we used the top of a soda bottle…

And a Gatorade bottle with the bottom cut off…

And bubble blowing frames made from two straws and a piece of string.  Simply thread the string through the straws and then tie a knot.

Although the bubbles are large, they don’t always stick around for people to chase through the yard like the bubbles that you buy at the store.  But we did get some good ones!

The photo above is cracking me up.  Owen was caught in the act of smashing the bubble!

You can also make a bubble wand out of a pipe cleaner.  Just bend it into a circle with a handle, dip it in the bubble solution, and blow!

Plain old white sugar works if you don’t have glycerin! Great suggestions.

Hey Sarah! This looks like great fun once the warmer weather is back in Canada!
I would like to build the water table as shown in your picks, do you have any plans showing how?
Thank you again for inspiring great play ideas…
