Build your own hilarious minions out of the LEGO bricks you already have!

We’ll show you how to build minions with one eye or two, and then the design is easy to customize further from there.

This post was originally published in February 2015. We updated this project with better instructions in May 2024.

There’s something irresistible about these silly guys!

Our original minion instructions involved drawing on the mouths for some of the minions with a dry erase or Sharpie marker (you can erase Sharpie with rubbing alcohol.) Drawing the mouths enables you to make some great expressions, like the minion below.

Writing on LEGO bricks is not my favorite, however, so we updated the instructions with two ways to make a minion mouth with bricks.

After you build them, it’s time to find things for them to do.

Ooooooooh…

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

LEGO Minions Building Instructions

How to build a two-eyed minion:

Step 1: Start with a 2 x 4 blue brick. Add a 2 x 2 blue brick and two 1 x 2 yellow bricks.

Step 2: Find the yellow bricks shown.

Step 3: Place a 2 x 1 x 1 1/3 curved slope on the left side. Then place a 2 x 2 yellow corner plate on the right side.

Step 4: Add a 2 x 4 blue plate and two 2 x 4 yellow plates.

Step 5: Make the mouth by adding a 1 x 3 yellow slope, two 1 x 2 yellow bricks, and a 1 x 1 yellow brick.

Step 6: Then add a 2 x 4 yellow plate and a 2 x 4 yellow brick.

Step 7: Place a 2 x 2 yellow plate and two 1 x 2 black plates on top of that.

Step 8: Place a 1 x 2 – 2 x 2 yellow bracket on top of the head. Then add a 1 x 4 yellow plate and two 1 x 1 yellow plates. Find the pieces shown.

Step 9: Finish up the head shape by adding a 2 x 4 plate. Then put a 2 x 2 plate on top of that. Add two 1 x 4 double curved slopes to the top.

Step 10: Build the eyes. Grab a 2 x 4 light gray plate. Add two 2 x 2 white round plates and two 1 x 1 black round plates. Find a 1 x 2 yellow plate and two 1 x 1 black plates.

Step 11: Use the two black 1 x 1 plates to make a hand. Then add a 1 x 2 yellow plate to the other arm. Attach a 1 x 1 plate with a clip to make a hand that can hold things.

Attach the eyes to the bracket on the face.

Step 12: Add some legs and feet! Each leg is a 1 x 1 blue brick and a 1 x 2 black plate.

How to build a one-eyed minion:

The design for the one-eyed minion is very similar.

For this minion, I used a 1 x 2 yellow Technic brick for the mouth.

Then the eye is a 2 x 2 white round tile with one stud and a 1 x 1 black round plate.

It’s fun to build a one-eyed minion from the scene in Despicable Me 2 where Gru is trying to call Lucy to ask her out.

This one has a light gray bracket to hold the eye instead of the yellow bricks with a stud on the side.
