Here’s a fun winter building challenge for kids! How many different snowflakes can you create with LEGO® bricks? (It’s more than you’d think!)
Before getting started, gather your pieces. Look for white plates (flat bricks) that are 1 x 3 and 1 x 4. If you’re planning to do this activity with a group, it may be worth it to order extra 1 x 3’s and 1 x 4’s from Brick Link. Otherwise, you can use what you have and supplement with other colors. Blues and purples would look good with snowflakes as well!
Besides basic plates, see what else you can find that might make an interesting snowflake. 2 x 2 round plates work well! I also like the 2 x 2 corner plates.
A great way to start building a snowflake is to connect six 1 x 3 or 1 x 4 plates, like this.
Then add a 1 x 4 plate at each corner.
Then add more details! If you think outside the box a little, you can attach bricks at interesting angles. If you place a 1 x 1 round plate under each corner plate, then you can turn the corner plate to just the right angle.
Here’s the completed snowflake.
Here’s another of my favorites.
Try using 2 x 2 round plates, those little single claws, and 1 x 1 plates with a clip. So many possibilities!
Have fun building!
