Make some paper plate Christmas trees! This craft is so fun for kids, and the supplies are SO simple.
Who knew that you can make such elegant Christmas trees out of paper plates and toilet paper rolls! Ha! Then decorate them with whatever craft supplies you have on hand.
I really love the fact that kids can customize this craft with their own tree design. The tree can be narrow or wide, and the trunk can be short or tall. Then, they can choose to decorate with buttons, ribbon, sequins, pom poms, paint, or whatever craft supplies you have.
Preschoolers will love painting the trees and gluing on decorations, as long as they have an adult to assemble the tree.
Older kids can make this craft on their own!
Supplies Needed for Paper Plate Christmas Trees:
- Paper plates – cheap white uncoated ones
- Toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls
- Green and brown paint – we used acrylic
- Pom pom balls
- Buttons
- Sequins
- Ribbon
- Whatever other embellishments you want!
- Your craft glue of choice – we used hot glue
- Scissors
This supply list is very flexible. Beyond the paper plates and toilet paper rolls, you can really use whatever you want! You can even just color the Christmas trees with crayons or makers.
Step 1: Cut a wedge out of your paper plate as shown.
Step 2: Bend your plate into a cone shape and secure it with glue. Hot glue is really the best for this step since it holds almost immediately.
You can overlap the sides as much as you want to make the tree more narrow.
If you want really narrow trees, cut more than 1/4 out of the plate. My narrow tree has 1/3 of the plate removed.
Step 3: Paint your trees green.
I decided to add some pine needle details in a lighter green, and I love how it turned out! This may be too much for younger kids, but older kids will enjoy this step.
Be sure to use a very small paint brush if you decide to add needles!
Step 4: Paint your tree trunks (toilet paper rolls) brown.
Step 5: Decorate your Christmas trees! Glue on buttons or whatever you want.
For the ribbon, I used glue to tack it down in various places around the tree.
For this tree, I only glued the red and white string at the top and bottom of the tree. You can add glue in more places if you think it needs it!
