Lately, the boys have been into anything that shoots, flings, or pops. I experimented and created this simple Nerf dart popper for them, and they were thrilled!
To make one, you need:
- A piece of 3/4 inch PVC pipe, cut to about 4 inches long
- A balloon
- A rubber band
Construction is simple. Cut the balloon as shown, and place it over the end of the PVC pipe.
Fasten it on with a rubber band, and you’re ready to play!
To shoot, pull back on the balloon and let go! We had good success with any type of Nerf dart.
I will say, though, that what shoots the best is something harder than a Nerf dart. Nerf darts are the SAFEST option. However, Gresham found that a little plastic “fire” (it’s a rod shaped plastic piece) from his McDonald’s Skylander toy shot REALLY far and well. Please note that I am not recommending giving kids unsafe things to shoot, but if you have bigger kids that can handle it, you might experiment with shooting harder items. You can even make an experiment out of it – what object shoots the farthest?
